Check before you buy

If you are buying new, try to inspect as much of the tent as possible in the shop. New tents do get damaged in transit and some also slip through quality control. If you are buying secondhand get the owner to pitch the tent while you are there.
Check the canvas for signs of mildew and wear, especially where roof panels come into contact with frame and clips. Check the frame for damage or corrosion. Springs go, ends distort and poles bend. Does the wear bear out the tent's history?
Do not be scared to say no if you are not happy with your potential purchase. And remember, using your local retailer will reduce the chance of buying faulty goods while maximising after sales service.
