If you are buying new, try to inspect as much of the tent as possible
in the shop. New tents do get damaged in transit and some also slip
through quality control. If you are buying secondhand get the owner
to pitch the tent while you are there.
Check the canvas for signs of mildew and wear, especially where roof
panels come into contact with frame and clips. Check the frame for
damage or corrosion. Springs go, ends distort and poles bend. Does
the wear bear out the tent's history?

Do not be scared to say
no if you are not happy with your potential purchase. And remember,
using your local retailer will reduce the chance of buying faulty
goods while maximising after sales service.
